If you’re thinking about traveling solo, there’s no better way to see the world on your own terms. I started my journey when I needed a fresh start, and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made.
Don’t wait—book that trip and embrace the freedom of doing exactly what you want, when you want. Solo travel is empowering, liberating, and an incredible way to connect with yourself and the world around you. Start with safe, solo-friendly destinations, plan your trip, trust your instincts, and take the leap—you won’t regret it!
Use flight comparison websites, set up price alerts, and book in advance. Flying mid-week or during off-peak seasons can also help you snag better deals.
I love using Google Flights and Skyscanner to find good flight deals. These two allow you to have a more broad search and find what the cheapest times to fly are.
I also suggest not buying tickets through 3rd parties as if there is an issue with ticket the airlines will not help you and you’ll have to contact the 3rd party and that is nearly impossible to do.
Saving money while traveling is all about planning smart. Start by booking flights and accommodations in advance to snag the best deals. Consider traveling during the off-season when prices are lower.
Use public transportation, eat like a local, and stay in budget-friendly accommodations like hostels or vacation rentals. If you’re flexible, try last-minute deals or travel reward programs. Every little bit adds up, allowing you to stretch your budget and make the most of your adventures.
Use ATMs for the best exchange rates, but be aware of fees. Avoid airport exchange counters, and consider using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. I love the Charles Schwab debit card when traveling. It has no transaction fees and all ATM fees are reimbursed.
Use an international SIM card when you land or even better download Airalo and get a digital SIM that is ready for you soon as you land you’ll be connected, or get a global roaming plan from your carrier if you don’t want to use a SIM card.
I used T-Mobile for a long time because my monthly plan included international use. It included unlimited data and if I needed to make any calls it was .25 cents a min. I recommend just using WhatsApp if you need to call family or you can use Skype for 2.99 a month. Many destinations also offer free Wi-Fi in public areas.
Look for travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and any activities you plan to do. Make sure it’s valid for the duration and destinations of your trip. I’ve used World Nomads for years but if you need more detail check out this post.
Research local recommendations, eat where locals eat, avoid overly advertised attractions, and explore beyond the main tourist areas. Avoid restaurants anywhere near tourist attractions. Most of those places are overpriced, and underwhelming.
Using apps like Google Maps and TripAdvisor can also help. A great way to find unique places is going to Atlas Obscura.
Stay in local accommodations like guesthouses or hostels, take part in community events, join local tours, and use apps like Meetup to connect with locals.

This is not a cut and dry answer. There are many things that lead to how it all started but in short I started traveling solo after leaving a dead-end job and an unhealthy relationship. I choose destinations based on my interests, cultural experiences, and the stories they have to offer. I’m also drawn to places where I can connect with locals and learn about their traditions.
When I’m being a little more spontaneous I’ll go to Goolge and look for the cheapest flight, see if it’s someplace I’ve been before and do a little research then book it. This was exactly what I did while traveling through South East Asia.
I stay safe by researching my destinations, staying in reputable accommodations, keeping in touch with friends and family, and always trusting my gut. I also make sure to have copies of important documents, back up credit and debit cards as well as a backup plan.
It’s all about balance and time management. I set clear work hours, use tools to stay organized, and prioritize tasks. This allows me to enjoy my travels while staying productive.
Start with places that feel safe to you, trust your instincts, and plan ahead. Always stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Solo travel is empowering and can be life-changing.
Every country offers something unique, but my most memorable experiences have been in Lebanon, The Philippines, and Malaysia. As well as Albania of course because now I live here. Albania has a special place in my heart. Its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality make it an incredible place to live and explore.
I actually get this question often. Traveling solo can have moments of loneliness, but it’s also an opportunity for incredible self-discovery and connection. When you travel alone, you’re more likely to engage with locals, meet fellow travelers, and build meaningful relationships along the way.
You have the freedom to immerse yourself in the experience, whether that means enjoying your own company or making new friends. Embrace the journey, and you’ll find that solo travel is as fulfilling and social as you want it to be.
Absolutely! I always travel with a GoPro for capturing adventures, a reliable travel adapter for charging devices, and a data blocker for secure charging on the go. These essentials make my travels smoother and safer. I have some more suggestions on my favorite travel gear here.
